IELTS Scoring | Band Score Calculation & Requirements

Understanding IELTS Scoring & Band Scores

Master the IELTS scoring system to understand exactly how your band scores are calculated. Learn the 0-9 band scale, module-wise marking criteria, Academic vs General Training score conversion, and what each band score means for your university or immigration goals.

How IELTS Scoring Works

The IELTS scoring system uses a 9-band scale from 0 to 9, with half-band increments (e.g., 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5). Each of the four modules — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — receives an individual band score based on your performance. Your Overall Band Score is the average of these four module scores, rounded to the nearest half or whole band.

Unlike many other tests, IELTS doesn’t have a “pass” or “fail.” Instead, different institutions and immigration authorities set their own minimum band score requirements. Understanding how scoring works helps you set realistic targets and prepare strategically for the bands you need.

The scoring criteria differ between modules: Listening and Reading are scored objectively based on the number of correct answers (40 questions each), while Writing and Speaking are assessed by certified examiners using detailed band descriptors that evaluate specific criteria like task achievement, coherence, lexical resource, and grammatical range.

IELTS Band Scale: What Each Score Means

The 9-band scale reflects your English proficiency level from non-user to expert.

9

Expert User

Fully operational command of English: appropriate, accurate, and fluent with complete understanding. Rarely achieved — less than 1% of test takers.

8

Very Good User

Fully operational command with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies. Handles complex detailed argumentation well. May achieve when studying in English-speaking countries.

7

Good User

Operational command of English, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriate usage, and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning.

6

Competent User

Generally effective command of English despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage, and misunderstandings. Can use and understand fairly complex English, particularly in familiar situations.

Most universities require Band 6.5-7.5. Most immigration programs require Band 6.0-7.0.

How Overall Band Score Is Calculated

Overall Band Score = Average of 4 Module Scores (rounded)

The average is rounded to the nearest half or whole band. If it ends in .25, it rounds up to the next half band. If it ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band.

IELTS Scoring FAQs

IELTS is scored on a 9-band scale from 0-9 in half-band increments (e.g., 6.0, 6.5, 7.0). Each of the 4 modules (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) receives an individual band score. Your Overall Band Score is the average of the 4 module scores, rounded to the nearest half or whole band. Listening and Reading are scored based on correct answers (40 questions each), while Writing and Speaking are assessed by certified examiners using detailed band descriptors.

Listening and Speaking scoring is identical for both Academic and General Training. Reading scoring differs: Academic requires 30-32 correct answers out of 40 for Band 7.0, while General Training requires 34-35 correct answers for Band 7.0 (because General Reading texts are easier, so you need more correct answers for the same band). Writing scoring criteria are the same for both modules.

The Overall Band Score is the average of your 4 module scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest half or whole band. For example: if your scores are L:7.0, R:6.5, W:6.0, S:7.0, the average is 6.625, which rounds to 6.5. If the average ends in .25, it rounds up to the next half band. If it ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band.

Requirements vary: Most universities require Band 6.5-7.5 overall with minimum 6.0-6.5 in each module. Top universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard) typically require Band 7.5. For Canada PR (Express Entry), you need minimum Band 6.0 in each module (CLB 7), but Band 8.0+ in Listening maximizes your CRS points. For Australia migration, Band 6.0 is minimum (Competent), but Band 8.0 (Superior) gives maximum points. Always check your specific institution or visa requirements.

No. IELTS does not offer a “single module retake” option. If you want to improve your score in one module, you must retake the entire test (all 4 modules). However, your previous scores remain valid for 2 years, so you can choose which test date score to send to institutions. Some institutions accept “One Skill Retake” (a new feature in some countries), but this is not yet available globally.

IELTS scoring is highly reliable and consistent. Listening and Reading are scored objectively by computer (for computer-delivered) or trained markers (for paper-based). Writing and Speaking are assessed by certified examiners who undergo rigorous training and regular monitoring. If you believe your score is inaccurate, you can apply for an Enquiry on Results (EOR) within 6 weeks of your test date. If your score changes, you receive a full refund of the EOR fee.

If you didn’t achieve your target band, you have several options: (1) Retake the IELTS test (no limit on attempts), (2) Check if your target institution offers pre-sessional English courses for candidates slightly below the requirement, (3) Consider institutions with lower requirements, or (4) Join a targeted preparation program focusing on your weak modules. At SpeakIQ, we help students identify exactly where they lost marks and develop strategies to improve in their next attempt.
