IELTS Test Day Checklist: What to Bring to the Exam

Test day anxiety is real, but forgetting a crucial document doesn’t have to be. Our free IELTS Test Day Checklist Generator creates a customized, printable list of exactly what you need to bring based on whether you are taking the Computer-delivered or Paper-based test. Use this tool the night before your exam to ensure you are 100% prepared.

The Golden Rule of IELTS ID Requirements

The most critical item on your checklist is your identification. Your ID must be the exact same document you used when you booked the test. If you booked with your passport, you must bring your original, physical passport. Photocopies, digital photos on your phone, or driver’s licenses (unless specifically allowed in your country) will not be accepted. If your ID does not match, you will not be allowed to take the test, and you will lose your test fee.

Paper-Based vs. Computer-Delivered: What’s the Difference?

The items you need to bring change depending on your test format:

  • Paper-Based Test: You must bring your own writing instruments. The test center will provide the paper, but you need HB or B pencils for Listening and Reading (because you must fill in a bubble sheet), and a black or blue pen for the Writing section. Bring a sharpener and an eraser as well.
  • Computer-Delivered Test: You do not need to bring pencils or pens. The test center provides the computer, headphones for the Listening test, and a keyboard/mouse. However, you should bring your glasses if you need them to read from a screen, as staring at a monitor for 3 hours can cause eye strain.

Items You Are NOT Allowed to Bring

Just as important as what to bring is what to leave at home. To prevent cheating, IELTS test centers have strict security rules. You cannot bring:

  • Mobile phones, smartwatches, or any electronic devices (they must be turned off and stored in a designated area).
  • Bags, coats, or hats (you will be asked to remove them).
  • Food or snacks (except for a transparent water bottle with the label removed).
  • Dictionaries, notes, or correction fluid/tape.

Knowing what to bring is easy; knowing how to tackle the exam is the real challenge. SpeakIQ provides Best Online IELTS Coaching to ensure you walk into that test center feeling calm, prepared, and ready to achieve your target band score.
