IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR): The Complete Eligibility Guide
Failing to achieve your target band score in just one section of the IELTS exam used to mean retaking the entire 3-hour test. Fortunately, the IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) policy has changed the game. This feature allows candidates to retake just one section (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) to improve their overall score. Our free OSR Eligibility Calculator instantly checks if you qualify for this time-saving and cost-effective option.
What is the IELTS One Skill Retake?
The One Skill Retake allows you to redo a single section of your IELTS test if you are unhappy with your result. Instead of paying for and sitting through the full Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking exams again, you only book and pay for the specific skill you need to improve. The new score will replace the old score for that specific section on your Test Report Form (TRF).
Strict Eligibility Rules for OSR
Not everyone can use the One Skill Retake. Cambridge and IDP have implemented strict rules to prevent abuse of the system. To be eligible, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- Computer-Delivered Only: OSR is currently only available for candidates who took the full test on a computer. Paper-based test takers must retake the full exam.
- The 60-Day Window: You must book your One Skill Retake within 60 days of your original full test date. If you miss this window, you lose the option.
- One Retake Per Full Test: You can only use the One Skill Retake option once per full IELTS test. You cannot retake two different skills from the same original test.
- Full Test Completion: You must have completed all four sections of the original full test to be eligible.
How the One Skill Retake Impacts Your Overall Score
When you complete your One Skill Retake, you will receive a new Test Report Form. This new TRF will display your new score for the retaken skill, while your original scores for the other three skills remain exactly the same. Your overall band score is then recalculated based on the new average.
For example, if your original scores were Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 5.5, and Speaking 6.5 (Overall 6.5), and you retake Writing and score a 7.0, your new TRF will show L:8.0, R:7.0, W:7.0, S:6.5, giving you a new Overall Band of 7.0.
Is the One Skill Retake Accepted by Universities and Immigration?
This is the most critical question. While the One Skill Retake is an official IELTS product, acceptance depends entirely on the organization receiving your scores.
- Universities: The vast majority of universities in the UK, Australia, Canada, and the US fully accept the One Skill Retake TRF, as it is an official Cambridge document.
- Immigration (IRCC, UKVI, etc.): Acceptance varies. For example, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) currently accepts the One Skill Retake for Express Entry. However, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has specific rules regarding Secure English Language Tests (SELTs). Always check directly with your target institution or immigration body before booking.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How much does the One Skill Retake cost?
The cost of a One Skill Retake is typically about one-quarter of the price of a full IELTS test, though exact pricing varies by country and test center.
Can I choose which skill to retake?
Yes. You can choose to retake Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking, regardless of which one is your lowest score. However, it is highly recommended to retake the skill that is pulling your overall average down the most.
What if I score lower on the One Skill Retake?
You will have the option to keep your original Test Report Form. If your new score is lower than your original score, you can simply discard the new TRF and use the original one for your applications.
